Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research. But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event. The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.

How Did This Come About?

I was having a conversation with a coworker about a design I did for my company’s web site. It was a joke design which attempted to take “web 2.0″ design elements and mash them together to create something truly ugly but still very web2.0y.

I used a lot of pink and this coworker said somehting to the extent of, “Pink could never look good as the predominant color on a site.” I didn’t agree and asked for some pink site recommendations in the 9rules member forum. I got a lot of great links, which I will be putting up soon.

But then, as I was responding to someones post, I thought, hey wouldn’t it be great if… And so I wrote that:

So much pink around… maybe we should pinkify our sites for Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is October. Somewhat in the vein of Dustin’s Get Naked Day.

That’d be sweet to get 200+ 9r member sites (and hopefully influence others) to go pink for a month. Could publicise it, get more traffic, accolades, etc. Plus raise awareness of Breast Cancer research, raise money… It could be a fun group activity that also helps a good cause.

Would that be of interest to anyone?

Then I went out and bought a domain name, installed Wordpress (twice… don’t ask), and here we are.

I am looking for all the help I can get, so let me know if you are interested.

I’m in! Of course, my previous design was pink already, so not too difficult. :) This is a great idea and as a woman, I really appreciate your leading this action.

Thanks, Mike!

And Natalie, men get breast cancer too (just that people don’t want to talk about that even more than breast cancer in women).

But I definitely get and appreciate your comment. :)

Count me in on this one. Get in touch if you need any additional help.

I would love to help out in any way I can. Great idea!

I didn’t think about that Matthew, but you’re right. I have such respect for men and all the social responsibilities they have. Women have it easy, being allowed to whine about their troubles anytime.

great idea!! I particpate in the boobiethon (boobiethon.com) every October. I’d be happy to particpate in this as well. We could never have too much awareness!! Thanks for starting it. If I can help in any way, just holla!

[...] So go read about it, put the button on your site and show your support. [...]

I’ll be more than happy to participate and publicize the entire idea on Ekonoline. Great thinking, guys. ;-)

[...] What began as a discussion in the 9rules forums has slowly begun to blossom into so much more. Led by Matthew Oliphant, the idea is quickly gathering support. With a good month’s warning, I can hardly not do this.

I am totally down. yay for pink for october!

We already are all the year ;)

What a great idea! My Mum is just recovering from treatment for Breast Cancer, and thats the second time she’s had cancer so it’s pretty close to home for me.

I’ll definately up for a pink october!

A great idea! We’ll be taking our company site pink for the month of October and look forward to seeing all the other sites ‘pretty in pink’.

What the hey, I’ll support and join the movement…!!

[...] Matthew’s original idea was to try out how much pink any site could carry in its design before it becomes too much. As a result, the idea was launched to try and get as many sites as possible to go pink and to link it to an organization worthy of this initiative. Going Pink For October was the result, and being a good 9Ruler, Matthew managed to convince most of the other rulers to join him. It’s that simple, really. [...]

[...] Why not go pink? Pink for October started, in an odd way, thanks to one of my coworkers. Now the challenge is to convince as many sites as possible to promote National Breast Cancer Awareness month (let’s make that International) and raise money for breast cancer research. [...]

Great stuff, I’m always pink but I added some of your awesome graphics and did a write up. Hopefully more join in.
