Go Pink in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness

Sep 18 2006

Since I initially contacted him to discuss a mini-site I was working on, Matthew and I have been in discussions surrounding the idea of creating a page on this site specifically geared toward men and their issues surrounding breast cancer. We both have the same goal: increasing awareness of breast cancer among men, increasing communication between both men and women, and discussing the specific issues men face when dealing their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a friend, family member, or partner.

To that end, I’ve spent the last couple of days working on what I think the page should contain, including information and statistics about breast cancer in men and resources for men to get help. However, I am only one person. Since this site is designed to serve a greater purpose — helping support breast cancer awareness and research — it seems only fair to ask for feedback from everyone.

So, to the men in the audience, what sort of resources would you like to see included on this page? Is there anything you feel would be particularly helpful to yourself or other men? For women, who suffer from drastically higher cases than men, how can we help promote discussion of breast cancer between the genders? How can men support the women in their lives? How can they support themselves? So, if you have any ideas (any at all) feel free to leave a comment on this post or, if you feel more comfortable doing so, e-mail me.

The idea of setting up a discussion forum for the site has also come up on a number of occasions. The idea would be to hopefully extend the conversation and dialog between members past the month of October. What are everyone’s thoughts?

Whew, that was a lot to spill out of my head. Thank you to everyone who has shown support for this project. We have already received a submission for the ‘Share’ section of the site, but would love to see more. If you have anything at all to contribute, feel free! Thank you again and let’s see how we can make this event a smashing success!

Cheers,

-Brian Gilham

Awesome idea…..I have been working on a splash page for our business site (I just spent 6 weeks working on our new site design so I’m going with the intro pink page instead of the entire site pink) and a couple of buttons for you. My wife just lost her mother to cancer a few years ago, and when I mentioned the ‘ go pink ‘ idea to her she was very interested. I will contact you soon with the details for sending you the .gifs of the ‘ buttons ‘ I have been working on.

As far as a resource for men on the site…..I think there are other ways for men to get info about breast cancer and you should really focus on your mission ….to raise awareness. Maybe links to resources for men and breast cancer or something simple, but this is a complex issue and is better handled by GOOD sources of information ( ie. mens’ doctors???) Keep doing what you are doing….raising awareness…you are doing a great job of that. Just my 2 cents, but there is a lot of mis…information on the web about cancers of all sorts…focus on what your primary task was…to raise awareness.

I’ll email you soon with the link to the buttons….

John, thanks for the reply. The idea is not so much to provide technical details on breast cancer — you’re right, there are much better sources out there (which I plan to point to) — but to provide resources for some less tangible things.

I’d like to try my best to promote discussion between men, if only to try and raise awareness. Breast cancer is a topic which is often off-limits or taboo for many men and that’s what we would like to try and start to change.

Hi Brian:

I’ve got some early button designs ready for you to look at. Where do I send them??

I’ve designed them with both american and canadian flags attched…just for fun. And a very web 2.0 mattel starburst around them…again just for fun.

Let me know…via email..visit my old site ( man I hate it…) new site on the way.

Cheers,

John

I’ve e-mailed John, but I’ll answer here as well. I’m really only working on the “Men” page for Pink for October. While I would be more than happy to discuss what people have done to support the project (I love hearing about people doing creative things!), Matthew is the one to get in touch regarding buttons, banners, and the like.

You can find the link to e-mail him at the top-left of the site.

Thanks Brian…

I appreciate you letting me know so quickly! October is close and I can’t wait to see all the creative ways we will all be showing our support.

Cheers,

John

[…] A little under a month since initially asking for ideas, I’ve finally gotten my act together and posted a page specifically geared towards men. It’s a work in progress, but I’m anxious to hear what everyone thinks. Is the page effective? What sort of changes can we make to improve it? Check it out and let me know! You can leave a comment on this entry, or give me a shout via e-mail. […]
