Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research. But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event. The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.

3-ish Days To October

[update] I’ve got it working, but need to squash some bugs and integrate it with the main site. Very close now. [/update]

Last year about this time there was a list on this site that had roughly 20 links to sites that were Going Pink. As the emails came in, it was easy to add people to the list. I’d just open up my text editor, enter the site name and make it a hyperlink, save it and done.

Then the site got slashdotted. 11,000 unique visits in two days. And about 500 emails that week. I actually took a couple of days off work so I could keep up with updating the list, answering emails, updating the site, etc. I stopped adding to the list when it hit 500. I just couldn’t keep doing it. And I don’t plan on doing it this year. By hand anyway.

There’s a section on the site that’s sat there for a while mentioning something about “coming soon” for the sign up. And it is coming soon. I commissioned an application that will make it easy for you to just enter your info and get listed. I am just having a wee bit of trouble getting it to function properly. And did I mention there’s only 3-ish days to October?

So, one way or another there will be a page, on October 1, 2007, with which you will be able to sign up. Even if I have to do it by hand again. I think we are pretty close to figuring out the problem. Something about Media Temple and Rails. It’s all too technical for me, but I am muddling through.

Thanks for your patience.

Pinkbird Theme for WordPress Users

I received and email yesterday from Randa Clay about a theme she’s released for WordPress users.

randa clay’s pinkbird theme

The theme is based on her Bluebird theme (just imagine all the blue being pink). What I like is that it’s a simple adjustment and it works. The theme is available for download from Randa’s site in 2- and 3-column formats which gives a nice variety.

Thanks so much Randa!

How to Support a Friend With Breast Cancer

I got an email recently from Whitney Keyes about a 3-part video on how to support a friend with breast cancer.

whitney and wyatt - how to support a friend

I am linking to part 2 because it’s more directly related to the title of this post, but the other two parts are worth watching. No worries to watch it out of order.

The video gives some good tips on ways to be supportive, but I’d love to hear how you’ve gone about giving a good friend support during their bout with cancer. And I am sure other people would too. There are plenty of hits on this site from search engines with keywords related to this topic.

New Badges Large and Small

I just uploaded 5 6 7 9 new badges to the Downloads page. Feel free to add each and every one (okay, probably just one) to your site and link it here.

And if you have a badge, banner, or other linkable image to offer up send it in.
