Pink for October

3-ish Days To October

Filed under: The Event — Matthew Oliphant @ 21:01

[update] I’ve got it working, but need to squash some bugs and integrate it with the main site. Very close now. [/update]

Last year about this time there was a list on this site that had roughly 20 links to sites that were Going Pink. As the emails came in, it was easy to add people to the list. I’d just open up my text editor, enter the site name and make it a hyperlink, save it and done.

Then the site got slashdotted. 11,000 unique visits in two days. And about 500 emails that week. I actually took a couple of days off work so I could keep up with updating the list, answering emails, updating the site, etc. I stopped adding to the list when it hit 500. I just couldn’t keep doing it. And I don’t plan on doing it this year. By hand anyway.

There’s a section on the site that’s sat there for a while mentioning something about “coming soon” for the sign up. And it is coming soon. I commissioned an application that will make it easy for you to just enter your info and get listed. I am just having a wee bit of trouble getting it to function properly. And did I mention there’s only 3-ish days to October?

So, one way or another there will be a page, on October 1, 2007, with which you will be able to sign up. Even if I have to do it by hand again. I think we are pretty close to figuring out the problem. Something about Media Temple and Rails. It’s all too technical for me, but I am muddling through.

Thanks for your patience.

  1. Wow, 11,000 hits in two days! That’s awesome. You can always count on slashdot!

  2. Hoping it will happen again. But either way I think we are going to have a good event this year.

  3. I think it is amazing how you are trying to create awareness for this issue. My own blog http://www.modeblog.nl is pink and my main audience are women.

Please contact me so I can help create more awareness for this issue in The Netherlands.

  5. Looking forward to it. I just realised it’s less than a day until October here! Lucky I’ve finished my pink template! Just need to make some buttons :)

  6. Time flies..

We’ll will be pink again Matthew. I’d be happy to help out where I can, and I reckon there’d be plenty of people who would also..

Have you thought about regional helpers to help spread the load?

I’d be happy to have all the Australian sites contact me, and I could just assemble a list of links for you to cut and paste if the Rails proves a problem.

  7. I may take you up on that Mike. But we’ve got some time to make sure the app runs well. It’s pretty neat because it displays thumbnails of the site submitted. So I’d like to see it get a chance.

Like I said, however it works, on Monday I will open the site for sign ups.

  8. Wonderful, amazing idea. I just heard about it and already put up my Pink for October layout. I wish you luck in handling it this year – but the more the better! :)

  10. My site isn’t exactly the most personal of sites (hell, it’s meant to be informal corporate) but I just dived in and did my site up with everyone’s fave light red. :3

  17. Great idea. I don’t think Crafty Green Poet can
realistically go pink but my Alter Ego site has gone
    pink for the month:

  18. Besides going pink, I will also try to create and spread the awareness on breast cancer throughout the month.

  19. October has arrived! I have created a banner for my website that others are welcome to copy for their site. Thanks for doing this. I hope to help you reach your goal of raising $15,000 for breast cancer research.
