[update5] I feel like Homer Simpson: site goes up, site goes down. Site goes up, site goes down. My apologies as the code errors that some of you are experiencing are aggravating to me too.[/update5]

After much prodding, cursing (like the kind that would make pirates blush), kicking, screaming, and did I mention cursing? he sign up application is up and running. Albeit many hours later than I wanted. My apologies for the delay.

Zach and I have been pulling our hair out for the last two days bashing bugs that just shouldn’t have even been there. The biggest issue was a missing hyphen (which kept the app from running); always hard to track down something that small in a web app. But who cares… it’s working! If you notice any issues with it please leave a comment on this post. The sign up page will be our way to officially count how many sites Went Pink, though we’ll use other means to count too.

So please sign up and add your site to the list. I’ll be moderating all submissions to reduce spam so you may have to wait a bit to see your site in the list. If I am not sleeping it won’t take longer than an hour. If I am sleeping… A little longer. :)

We are doing some fun code magic and taking screen shots of all the sites that submit, so it will be easy to get a quick look via thumbnail as to what the sites look like.

My thanks to Zach for coding it. My thanks to me for finding where the missing hyphen needed to be. :)

And finally my thanks to everyone that’s Going Pink this year.

[update] I’ve got it working, but need to squash some bugs and integrate it with the main site. Very close now. [/update]

Last year about this time there was a list on this site that had roughly 20 links to sites that were Going Pink. As the emails came in, it was easy to add people to the list. I’d just open up my text editor, enter the site name and make it a hyperlink, save it and done.

Then the site got slashdotted. 11,000 unique visits in two days. And about 500 emails that week. I actually took a couple of days off work so I could keep up with updating the list, answering emails, updating the site, etc. I stopped adding to the list when it hit 500. I just couldn’t keep doing it. And I don’t plan on doing it this year. By hand anyway.

There’s a section on the site that’s sat there for a while mentioning something about “coming soon” for the sign up. And it is coming soon. I commissioned an application that will make it easy for you to just enter your info and get listed. I am just having a wee bit of trouble getting it to function properly. And did I mention there’s only 3-ish days to October?

So, one way or another there will be a page, on October 1, 2007, with which you will be able to sign up. Even if I have to do it by hand again. I think we are pretty close to figuring out the problem. Something about Media Temple and Rails. It’s all too technical for me, but I am muddling through.

Thanks for your patience.

Welcome to Pink for October

Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research.

But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event.

The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), go out to that World Wide Web thing (in fact you’re on it right now! :) ) and educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that newfound knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.
