Make a Difference
There are a lot of ways you can make a difference. This page is set up in a relative order of importance. We think most changes happen because people get involved and make it happen. But first you have to educate yourself. Once you are knowledgeable, it’s time to do something. Going Pink is definitely doing something, but there are other ways too. Lastly, you can give money to people who are working to kick the ass of cancer. Not everyone can give money which is why we have it at the bottom of the page; it’s still very important but we know that everyone can Learn and Do.
This is a living page. If you have something you’d like us to add, please let us know. Particularly we are looking for non-US-based information as we consider this an international event since no one owns the web.
Learn
Since Pink for October relies on the power of people, start learning about breast cancer on Wikipedia.
Stop by your local oncology center. That may sound silly, but what better place to learn? It’s also an opportunity to build a relationship with people when you get to the point of being ready to Do.
Get a medical degree with a specialty in oncology. This option isn’t for everyone, but hey… why not!
Do
If you know anything about Breast Cancer consider editing the Wikipedia article. You can also edit the article on Pink for October if there’s something relevant to add. We don’t edit that page ourselves.
Do you have a video camera, camera, blog, newspaper even? Go find someone who knows more about Breast Cancer than you do. For this it should probably be someone who knows a lot about it. Interview them and put the results on the web. Find a doctor in your town who is a specialist. Find an organization that works to help people who have Breast Cancer. Talk to a survivor and get their perspective. Let us know what you come up with.
Volunteer. Give your time to someone who needs it. Go do paperwork at the hospital so the people who work there can focus on other things. Mow the lawn of someone who is going through treatment.
Give
Join the Pink for October effort to raise money.
This year we are raising money through Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Our goal is to raise $15,000 collectively through Pink for October. That does seem like a lot of money, but here’s how we chose it. In 2006, about 1500 sites Went Pink for the month of October. We figure if all 1500 people gave $10 a piece we’d have $15,000. Please feel free to post the link to our team page on your site in order to get as many people as possible to donate.
